A Guide to Hair Care during Pregnancy from Gore Hair Salon, Irmo

Hair problems during pregnancy

Here at our Hair Salon in Columbia we are here to help you with your hair concerns during and after pregnancy

As your levels of estrogen go up and down this may affect your hair.  Hormones will affect each woman differently.  Higher levels of estrogen can lead to thick glossy hair in pregnancy because estrogen slows down the normal hair shedding phase.  Some pregnant women end up with very oily or greasy hair, others have dry, brittle maternity hair and some may experience both!

Sometimes straight hair becomes curly during pregnancy.  Sometimes curly-haired pregnant women experience straighter hair.  Whatever happens to your hair, do not worry.  The hair designers at Gore Hair Salon are here to help.

Pregnant singer Beyoncé, actress Halle Berry and fashionista Kim Kardashian all prove that pregnancy should not stop you having fabulous pregnancy hair.  Britain’s future queen Kate Middleton and supermodel Gisele also manage to have stylish maternity hair styles.

Hair loss after giving birth

Some women experience some hair loss after giving birth.  As your estrogen levels return to normal it is normal to lose some hair.  It is unlikely to be excessive hair loss and it will grow back.  If you are concerned, please consult with your health care provider.

Having said that, at Gore Hair we understand that this can be a worrying time.   These tips should help you to reduce stress on your hair during pregnancy and after birth.

·                     Avoid tight braids, plaits, pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves and ponytails

·                     Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica

·                     Be gentle with your hair when it is wet

·                     Use hair dryers and other heated styling tools on a cool setting.

Is it safe to use chemical hair treatments while pregnant?

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), hair chemicals (for example hair dyes, perms and hair straightening or smoothing treatments) are probably safe chemicals to use during pregnancy because only a small amount is absorbed through the skin.

However, most health care professionals will probably advise you to avoid contact with hair chemicals until your second trimester.  While absorption of the chemicals through the skin is minimal, there are still concerns that breathing fumes could be harmful to the developing baby.

If you do decide to go ahead with a new hair color, tell your stylist at Gore Hair Salon that you are pregnant and ask for highlights or lowlights where we can use less chemical which equals less fumes and less contact with your scalp.
