America’s favorite vacation time of year has officially arrived.

All the destinations people daydream of all year long are dancing through their heads like sugarplums in December, destinations containing sun, surf, beaches, mountain trails, waterfalls and much more.

With all of this fun in mind, the planning begins:  travel, accommodations, schedules and of course, what to pack; clothes, shoes, toys and accessories, food and toiletries. We throw in toothbrushes and toothpaste, razors, deodorant, makeup, colognes and perfumes, and shampoo and conditioner.  But seldom do we stop to consider what our hair really needs while it, too, is on vacation.

Our hair is like a fabric and is often susceptible to the changing and harsh environments to where we travel. The beach offers great times but can be, at the least, “not kind” to our color, foil highlights, texture perms and other chemical services. Salt is a natural mordant (attractor) to the dyes in hair color and if you have naturally curly or wavy hair, you know that it is not just in the water, but in the air as well. This along with the chlorine in pools and the heat from the sun are a natural disaster to virgin hair, much less chemically treated hair. It can strip color, dull and discolor highlights and even relax curl from perms.

Our trip to the mountains can also be filled with hidden hair dangers.
The water coming from faucets can be filled with iron and other minerals that can get trapped in porous, chemically treated hair can make it vulnerable to holding these natural minerals in. This can have an adverse reaction to the chemicals in hair color, lighteners, and chemical texturizers, some as bad as disintegration of the hair itself in a matter of minutes after application.

So, you ask, “How can I protect my hair from this onslaught of environmental warfare”?  That’s easy, pack a vacation bag for your hair as well.  Talk to your stylist ahead of time about your destination and plans. Texture is limitless, from twists to loops, with emphasis on polished texture, but not an unfinished look.

• Braids are incredibly versatile and are always a favorite hair style for brides. Braids can be both bohemian or contemporary with intricate shapes and designs. There are many ways to incorporate a braid into a wedding hairstyle , from an asymmetrical braided chignon or bun, to an elegant fishtail head band.

Definitions 101

1. Up-Do : Also known as Up-Style, can be very elegant, with many variations and possibilities. A great Up-Style provides a beautiful wedding hairstyle that also brings out facial features and completes the beautiful bride “look”!
2. French Twist : A timeless elegant up-sweep for stylish bridal hair.
3. Chignon  ; A low bun or roll at the base of the nape of the neck. Cool and classy
   
4. Bun : A tight bun or coil that is done mostly on top of the head.
5. Half-Up or Half-Down : Upper portion of the front of the hair is styled on top of the head and locks are left down to flow generally with waves.
6. Side Sweep : Generally sweep to one side encompassing curls. An asymmetrical look as your wedding hair style.
7. Front of Up-Do : There many ways to style the front including a sweep, straight back, close to the head, fullness in the crown, a low side part or waves, even some falling tresses around your face. Let your imagination run with this as an unusual bridal hair style.
8. Short to Medium Hair : If your hair is too short for an up-do try curling all of your hair up and back and pinning in a shape. Don’t forget to add ornaments to spice up short hair.   A pixie looks great with a beautiful headband to add interest to a really short hairstyle. Hair grows out of a hole in our skin called the follicle.  At the bottom of the follicle, there is a “bump” called the papilla. The dermal papillae,  are small, nipple-like extensions of the dermis into the epidermis. They can be observed at the surface of the skin in hands and feet as epidermal orpapillary ridges (known as fingerprints).  The dermal papillae nourishes all hair follicles and brings food and oxygen to the lower layers of epidermal cells. 

Inside the follicle, there are sebaceous glands which produces sebum (oil) to help lubricate the skin and hair follicle. The papilla itself is fed blood by way of  blood vessels to which it changes into hair. The hair itself is composed of about 70 to 80 % keratin protein (the same protein as our nails) which gives the hair strength and body, about 12 to 18% moisture which give hair its softness and elasticity.  Finally 3 to 7% lipids (natural oils), melanin (color pigment) which is also a protein, carbohydrates and a few other things, but I think this is enough information for our purpose.

The hair shaft itself is composed of three layers.  The first is called the “cuticle layer”, the fibre’s envelope that protects the inner layer.  It has 3 to 10 layers that overlap like shingles on a roof. It’s primary function is to protect the second layer, the “cortex”, or cortical layer.  It is here you find 90%  of the hairs weight.  This layer contains the amino (protein) chains which corkscrew through the hair shaft. They are held together by cystine bonds, the bonds which actually hold the hair together and make it….. hair.  They, in turn, are held together in an inter cellular cement composed of a flexible keratin rich in lipids. Also found here in are grains of melanin which gives the hair it’s color.

The last is the “medulla” or the medullary canal.  It is segmented through and in some cases leaves bubble like areas in the hair.  It’s purpose in human kind is still unknown, but best educated guesses say that it is left over from when our ancestors  carried clubs and killed dinosaurs.  It is believed by some that it was hollow like animal fur and acted as a thermal regulator to keep them warm.

In our industry, we look at the texture of  hair as a fabric. Fine hair we compare to silk, medium hair as cotton and coarse hair as wool.  While we see more mechanical damage (ie hot tools) on coarse hair, we usually have more chemical damage (ie lighteners, permanent color, perms, etc.) on finer hair.  This is the reason there are so many different shampoos, conditioner and treatments on the market.  Look for our blog on these products and how they work.

So there you have it, the makeup of hair in a nutshell.  You may have learned more than you ever wanted to know, but now you have a better understanding of what that stuff is growing up there.
